Musical Theatre is a complex and multi-faceted art form that draws from a broad array of performance traditions in music, acting, and movement, and synthesizes them into one cohesive storytelling device. At the heart of this art form is the desire to present and reflect on our humanity as a community and as individuals. As a musical theatre educator, I aim to guide my clients through this complex learning process using the principles of nurture, rigor, and innovation.
Artists bring their talent and experiences into the studio and it is my responsibility to nurture their skills into the performer that they desire to be through the sharpening of creative instincts & technique, questioning their choices, and broadening their knowledge of musical style & performance practice. My studio is a safe environment where artists are held to high expectations; however, “mistakes” are highly encouraged. Every “mistake” in the performance studio is an exciting teachable moment… an opportunity for discovery. These moments force us to rigorously engage in honest critical conversation, guiding clients with questions and debate that lead to answers and discovery. These conversations and discoveries bring innovation and change to our field, an ever-changing and ever-evolving art form that continues to express the human condition through scene, song, and dance.
